SSG Robert Louis Cummings


Staff Sergeant Robert Louis Cummings., age 62, of Swansea died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at his residence. He was the husband of Nancy E. (Barney) Cummings to whom he had been married for the past 41 years.

Born in Pawtucket, son of Elizabeth J. (Wilcox) Cummings Williams of Providence, and the late Donald H. Cummings. He lived on the East Side of Providence for many years before moving to Swansea 35 years ago.

SSG Cummings was a graduate of Hope High School and received an associate degree from C.C.R.I.  He enlisted in Company D, 19th Special Forces Group, RIARNG on 3Feb68. He was a combat engineer (12B4S).  He was honorably discharged on 2Feb74

He was director of Ozone Operations for the National Energy Services Corp. in NJ, prior to that he was employed at Luzo Food Service as a chemical specialist for many years. He was a member of the Pink Tuxedo A Cappela Oldies Doowop Group for 30 years. A nature lover, he was a member of the Audubon Society, and an avid car enthusiast.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother, one daughter Jennifer L. Cummings of Seekonk, one son Michael R. Cummings and his wife Ramona of Warren, three brothers Dr. Stephen Cummings and his wife Edwina of Hope Valley, William Cummings and his wife Inez of Smithfield, Gary Cummings of Nova Scotia, two sisters Linda Cummings Laxton and her husband Glenn Laxton of Pawtucket, Donna Gallant of CA., grandchildren Miranda and Campbell Cummings, brother in law William Barney and his wife Ann of Westerly, mother in law Priscilla Barney of Warwick.

He was buried with military honors in the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI,
Section E, Row 57.
